A private dental clinic became the answer to "best dentist near me" in ChatGPT

A two-chair private dental practice in Manchester was already ranking well on Google but losing younger patients to AI-driven search. We built out a full AEO programme — schema markup, structured FAQ content, review-funnel automation — and made them the cited recommendation in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews within 30 days.

The starting point

Ranking on Google, invisible in AI

A two-chair private clinic with 7 years of trading, a strong Google Maps presence, and 110+ five-star reviews. They were comfortably ranked top-3 organic for "private dentist Manchester" — but new patient growth had plateaued and the practice owner had noticed younger patients (25–35) increasingly mentioning they'd "asked ChatGPT for a recommendation".

The problem: when we tested it, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews were recommending two competing practices — not theirs. None of the queries we tried surfaced them. Their content was excellent for traditional SEO but invisible to the answer engines.

What we did

The 30-day AEO programme

A focused AEO build, working from the structure of the site up to the content and reviews.

Day 1
Baseline audit. Tested 24 queries across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI. Practice cited 0 times. Two named competitors cited frequently.
Day 2–5
Full schema markup rollout: LocalBusiness, Dentist, MedicalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, Review schemas. Sitemap and robots.txt cleaned. Site converted to AI-friendly semantic HTML.
Day 6–10
Built 28 new FAQ blocks on the site, each one answering a specific patient question in 2–3 sentences. Format optimised for LLM extraction (clear question + clear answer + cited source).
Day 11–14
Set up a review-request automation: every patient gets a one-tap review prompt 48 hours after appointment. Lifted average monthly review volume from 6 to 18.
Day 15–21
Wrote and published 4 in-depth blog posts answering the most-searched questions ("is teeth whitening safe", "private vs NHS dentist Manchester cost", etc). Structured for LLM citation.
Day 22–28
External signal building: profile updates on 14 dental directories, structured-data submissions to local health directories, and 3 cited mentions on Manchester-area community blogs.
Day 29–30
Re-ran the 24 baseline queries. Practice now cited in 18 of 24, top result in 11. First "I found you through ChatGPT" patient booked on day 27.
What worked

Why AI engines started citing them

  • FAQ schema with concise, factual answers — LLMs grab these almost preferentially over blog content
  • Review volume and recency — went from 6/month to 18/month, AI engines weigh this heavily
  • Specific, local language in content ("private dentistry in Didsbury, Manchester" not "premium oral care")
  • External citations from local sources — community blogs, local press mentions — feed AI training and retrieval
  • Honesty about pricing — most competitors hid prices, the practice published them, which AI engines reward
  • Practitioner bios with credentials in structured format — answers "who is the dentist" in a way LLMs can parse
"
I didn't fully believe in this AEO thing when they pitched it. By week three I was watching new patients sit down in the chair and tell me "ChatGPT said you were the best in Didsbury". The maths on the first year of revenue from those patients makes the cost of the work look ridiculous.
